Dog Food Myths: Do Dogs Need to Eat Meat?
by Ian Germann
Dogs are often thought of as carnivorous animals, but do they actually need to eat meat? In the past we discussed the myth that dogs are carnivores. However, many people still believe that dogs must eat meat to stay happy and healthy. Today we’ll be exploring this myth and answering this question for sure.
Meat is a great source of protein, which is an essential nutrient that dogs need to maintain their muscle mass, build strong bones and support their overall health. As a complete source of protein, meat contains all of the essential amino acids that dogs need to thrive. These amino acids cannot be produced by the dog’s body and must be obtained through their diet. Meat is also highly digestible, which means that dogs can easily break it down and absorb its nutrients. Lastly, meat is very satisfying for dogs to eat, and this can help them feel full and satisfied after a meal.
So it seems only natural that dogs should eat meat, and while I would agree that dogs should eat meat, dogs don’t need to eat meat to fully meet their nutritional needs. As omnivores, dogs can eat a variety of other foods to get necessary nutrients, so meat can be substituted for a variety of different options.
There are several non-meat foods that can provide dogs with the protein and nutrients they need to maintain their health such as…
- Eggs: Eggs are a complete protein source, meaning they contain all of the essential amino acids that dogs need. They are also a good source of healthy fats and other nutrients, such as vitamins A and D.
- Legumes: Legumes, such as lentils, chickpeas, and peas, are high in protein and also contain fiber, vitamins, and minerals. Some high-quality plant-based dog foods contain legumes as a primary source of protein.
- Quinoa: Quinoa is a grain that is also a complete protein source. It is also a good source of fiber, vitamins, and minerals.
- Peanut Butter: Peanut butter and other nut butters are also good sources of protein for dogs. They are also a good source of healthy fats, which can help support healthy skin and coat.
Vegetarian dog diets are quite popular for many dog owners, and with the right food choices, they can meet all of the dogs nutritional needs. Evanger’s All Fresh Vegetarian Dinner is formulated to meet the nutritional levels established by the AAFCO nutrient profiles for dogs and cats of all life stages.
