Nutritional Tips for Huskies
by Ian Germann
Originally bred as sled dogs, huskies originated in the cold and harsh climate of the Siberian region of Russia. Over time they’ve become a popular breed, known for their high energy, stamina, and endurance levels. They’re also renowned for their friendly nature, intelligence, and striking appearance. Proper nutrition is essential for keeping huskies healthy, happy and active. In this article, we’ll discuss some important nutritional tips for huskies to meet their unique nutritional needs.
High Protein Diet
As a highly active breed, huskies require more protein than sedentary dogs to maintain their muscle mass and support their high energy levels. We suggest husky owners aim for a diet that’s 18-22% protein. When huskies are working or exercising, their muscles break down, and they require protein to repair and rebuild the damaged tissues. A diet that’s deficient in protein can lead to muscle loss, weakness and fatigue in huskies.

Avoid Excess Calcium
Excess calcium intake has been linked to hip dysplasia in huskies, a common orthopedic condition that affects the hip joint. Hip dysplasia occurs when the hip joint doesn’t form properly, leading to a loose or unstable joint that can cause pain, inflammation, and eventually arthritis. While genetics plays a significant role in hip dysplasia, there is evidence to suggest that excessive dietary calcium during a dog’s growth stage can contribute to the development of hip dysplasia.
Coat Care
One of the most distinctive features of huskies is their thick, double coat, which helps them stay warm in cold weather. To keep their coat healthy and shiny, it’s important to regularly brush their coat with a slicker brush or a rake to remove dead fur and detangle any knots. Omega-3 fatty acids, found in fish oil, can also help reduce shedding and promote a healthy coat by keeping it shiny and thick.
